Carpet Care
With just a little care, your carpet will last longer and look good throughout its life. You can keep your carpet in top condition by following the simple guidelines in this guide. Remember, if you vacuum regularly and treat stains immediately, your carpet will keep its beautiful appearance for much longer.
Vacuuming:
Surface dirt is unavoidable and sometimes unsightly, but dirt that is trampled down between the tufts has an abrasive cutting action that can eventually wear away the fibres. The best way to delay or prevent this destructive wearing action is to give your carpets a regular vacuuming.
There is a common myth that you should let a new carpet “settle in” for a week or so. In fact, entirely the reverse is true. Virtually all new carpets will shed a small amount of loose fibres and these should be removed by vacuuming as soon as possible. Otherwise the fibres will be walked back into the carpet and can cause a matted appearance.
Loop pile carpets, particularly Wool Berbers, should not be cleaned with a vacuum which has a beater attachment - this can cause excessivee fluffing and matting - this type of carpet should be vacuumed with the suction head only.
Entrance mats and barrier mats will reduce the amount of dirt carried on to your carpets from outside the home, but please remember that these mats must also be cleaned regularly.
Dealing with stains:
Accidental spillages on carpets are an unfortunate fact of life and no carpet is totally stain-proof.
Remember the golden rule that instant treatment can mean instant cure. NEVER RUB - but always blot to a damp dry state. Liquid spills should be soaked up immediately with absorbent tissue, preferably white, or a clean, dry cloth.
Avoid excessive rubbing and always work from the outside edges of the stain into the centre to avoid spreading. Use a blunt knife or spoon to gently scrape away any solids.
Cleaning solution: Detergent Solution
A teaspoon of neutral detergent, such as ‘Stergene’, to half pint (quarter litre) of warm water.
Detergent/vinegar solution
Add one teaspoon of white vinegar to the above detergent solution.
Ammonia Solution
One tablespoon of household ammonia to one cup of warm water. WARNING: Always test a small ‘out of the way’ area of your carpet for colour fastness prior to tackling the stain.
Dry Cleaning Solvent
A proprietary brand of dry cleaning solvent should be used. You will also need a blunt knife and some white tissues or absorbent cloth to blot up the stain as it is released. The modern alternative is K2R, a dry spray, which is best left overnight to work on any stain before vacuuming off.
Dealing with spillages or damage: Blood, chocolate, egg, ice-cream, glue, grass, gravy, fruit
Scrape up excess with a blunt knife. Use detergent solution, starting at the outer edge and blotting dry. Follow with ammonia solution. Blot dry. Do not rub.
Milk, soft drinks
Blot up the surplus spillage. Use detergent solution, starting at the outer edge and blotting dry. Follow with ammonia solution. Blot dry. Do not rub
Fats, shoe polish, lipstick, oil, solids, nail polish, tar, vomit, wax, grease, chewing gum
Scrape up with a blunt knife. Use dry cleaning solvent, followed by detergent/vinegar solution. Blot dry. Do not rub.
Coffee, tea, alcohol/wines, perfume, urine, liquid foods
Blot up the surplus spillage. Use detergent/vinegar solution. Work from the outer edge of the stain, using a little at a time and blotting up with dry cloths frequently. Do not rub.
LVT Care
With just a little care, your new floor will last longer and look great throughout its life. Here are some helpful tips and tricks to help you care for your new floor:
Each LVT & Vinyl Sheet has a top coating wear layer, however nothing is completely scratch proof and sharp objects can scratch the floor, so certain precautions should be taken. Avoid dragging or sliding heavy items like furniture across the floor. Place felt pads on furniture legs that are touching the floor. Mop up spills as soon as possible to prevent stains.
Each LVT floor is designed to last, but to ensure that it stays at its luxurious best for years to come, follow a few regular routines. Cleaning is easy, with just an ordinary broom, microfiber cloth, vacuum cleaner or damp mop with approved detergents.
It’s advisable not to use aggressive cleaning agents on your floor, to use steam cleaners or to let puddles of water to remain after cleaning. The PU finish of the wear layer eliminates the need for any special treatment after installation, but over time, an extra treatment with polymeric dispersion or a PU gloss polish may help if visible contaminations begin to develop.
Mattress Care
Expect body impressions:
As most people sleep in the same position every night, body impressions are a normal feature of handmade mattresses. You may find fillings settle or dip in the area where you sleep which can leave a ridge in the centre of the mattress. Just like the impressions that form on the insole of leather shoes, this is simply your mattress “getting to know you”.
Reducing body impressions:
We recommend following our rotating and turning instructions to minimise body impressions. Please note: our mattresses are extremely heavy. If you are unable to rotate and turn your mattress, with continued use, fillings will settle of their own accord, however this takes considerably longer.
Rotating or turning?
Check the label on the surface of your mattress for the following wording to determine which type of mattress you will be caring for: - Non-turn/rotate only/single sleeping surface/pillow top mattress - Turnable/turn with the seasons/dual sleeping surface mattress
Rotating your non-turn mattress
If your mattress label states non-turn / rotate only / single sleeping surface / pillow top, we recommend rotating your mattress regularly during the first few months and about four times a year thereafter. Note: If you struggle to rotate your mattress, do not worry, this is only a recommendation to help reduce body impressions.
Turning your turnable mattress
If your mattress is turnable or seasonal turn, we recommend turning and rotating your mattress regularly during the first few months and about four times a year thereafter. Note: If you struggle to turn and rotate your mattress, do not worry, this is only a recommendation to help reduce body impressions.
Mattress protection
We highly recommend using a good quality cotton, wool-faced or Tencel mattress protector. It’s a good idea to air the mattress regularly too, by leaving duvets folded back for a few hours each day. A waterproof protector may be used but we recommend a breathable Tencel type to eliminate condensation.
Supportive base
If you are using your new mattress on your own bed, it’s important that the base is in good condition. The mattress will contour to it, just as it does with your body, so we recommend replacing an old base. If the base is damaged in any way, it could be detrimental to your mattress. If your mattress is being placed on a slatted base, ensure the gaps are no more than 75mm apart. If they are, you should consider using a baseboard or under mattress – for more information get in touch with our sleep team today.
Cleaning
Remove dust from your mattress every few months using a soft brush. Never use a vacuum cleaner, even if you have a specific mattress attachment, as this can displace the natural fillings. Any spillages should be absorbed using a dry cloth or paper towels. If you need to sponge the mattress, use a damp cloth and a very mild solution of soap and water.
Sofa Cushion Maintenance
Here are some top tips from our expert upholstery team on how to maintain your sofa cushions:
- For fibre or feather seat and back cushions, plump daily
- For foam seat cushions, turn once a week
- Scatter cushions should be plumped daily
- Fabric sofa coverings should be vacuumed weekly to prevent dust build-up which can cause abrasion
